Kentucky Sen. Johnnie Turner dies following September lawn mower accident
SUMMARY: Kentucky State Senator Johnny Turner, a Republican from Harlan, has died from injuries sustained after driving his lawn mower into an empty swimming pool on September 15th. Turner, a US Army veteran, was a member of both the Kentucky State House and Senate, having been elected to the Senate in 2021. He was running for re-election this November. Following the news, reactions poured in from Frankfurt, with Governor Andy Beshear expressing condolences on X, stating that he and his wife are saddened by Turner’s passing and are sending prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.
“Eastern Kentucky and the 28th Senate District have suffered an irreparable loss,” Sen. Phillip Wheeler shared Wednesday morning.

Sunny skies to start the new week
SUMMARY: Temperatures on Monday morning start in the 20s across the area, with some teens in northern regions. Expect abundant sunshine and a midday temperature around 37°F, with an afternoon high near 45°F. Evening temps will drop to 34°F, reaching 32°F overnight. Light southwest winds will keep temperatures from falling too much. The weather remains quiet with passing clouds, and sunshine continues on Tuesday. Temperatures will rise through the week, reaching the 50s, and rain chances increase Thursday night into Friday. After some scattered showers, drier weather returns by the weekend with highs ranging from 51°F to 58°F.

Thawing out from the deep freeze this weekend
SUMMARY: Central and Eastern Kentucky will experience a return to the 40s for highs this weekend. After a cold finish to the week with snow showers and temperatures struggling to reach the 20s, milder air will move in Saturday, bringing temperatures to the low 40s. Sunday will be slightly cooler with highs around 40 degrees, and a cold front will pass through, bringing a few clouds and shifting winds. A tranquil weather pattern will follow into early next week, with highs in the low to mid-40s. There may be a brief cold spell next Thursday, but it’s uncertain.

Kentucky unemployment rises even as state adds more jobs | Kentucky
SUMMARY: Kentucky’s unemployment rate rose to 5.2% in December 2024, a slight increase from November, despite more residents finding jobs. The labor force expanded by over 5,000 individuals, with 1,973 jobs added, totaling 1,976,436 employed. However, the number of unemployed grew by 3,065 to 108,623. Kentucky’s workforce participation rate rose to 58.2%, though it remains lower than neighboring states. Over the past year, jobs, excluding self-employed and agricultural workers, increased by 28,700 or 1.4%. Notably, construction jobs rose by 4.8%, and the educational and health services sector added 16,500 jobs year-over-year, despite some recent losses.
