Prominent Mississippi civil rights attorney prohibited from practicing law for one year
SUMMARY: Carlos Moore, a civil rights attorney from Grenada, has been suspended from practicing law in Mississippi for one year due to misconduct. The Mississippi Supreme Court found that he violated conduct rules by depositing $300,000 from a wrongful death settlement into his personal law account instead of the victim’s estate account. Moore claimed over $110,000 in legal fees from the settlement related to Jamaal Mallard’s death in a Jackson jail, but did not inform the victim’s brother about his share of the funds. Moore had previously faced calls for removal as a municipal court judge due to a pattern of misconduct.

Trump gets no jail time or penalties in hush-money case sentence
SUMMARY: President-elect Donald Trump was sentenced in his hush money case but faced no punishment, allowing him to continue his presidency without the threat of jail or fines. His conviction on 34 felony counts was upheld, marking him as the first convicted felon to assume the presidency. Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan cited Trump’s impending presidency as a reason for the unconditional discharge. Trump, who claims the case is a political witch hunt, denied any wrongdoing regarding payments made to porn actor Stormy Daniels. Lawmaker eyeing certificate of need reform to improve Mississippi’s healthcare
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers aim to reform the state’s certificate of need (CON) laws as a response to ongoing healthcare challenges, particularly after Medicaid expansion efforts stalled. With a new federal administration on the horizon, legislators are shifting focus away from Medicaid to CON law reforms, led by State Rep. Sam Creekmore. He proposes a “common sense” measure to reduce government oversight, allowing hospitals more autonomy in adding services like outpatient dialysis. Though critics highlight the lengthy and costly CON application process, Creekmore emphasizes maintaining protections for rural hospitals while encouraging competition and enhancing care access for Mississippians.
