SUMMARY: Kentucky is experiencing a severe shortage of EMS workers, one of the worst in the country, as reported by the Board of Emergency Medical Services. Contributing factors include low pay, insufficient trainers in Western and Eastern Kentucky, and inadequate reimbursement rates for ambulance rides. As a result, fewer paramedics are available, which impacts patient care when higher-level services are needed. To address the crisis, suggestions include increasing ambulance service reimbursements and providing scholarships to encourage to pursue EMT careers.
