Kentucky governor unveils paid leave plan for state workers with a new child or serious illness
SUMMARY: Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced plans for state employees to receive up to six weeks of paid leave for bonding with a new child or addressing serious medical issues. This benefit, available in three intervals throughout an employee’s career, aims to make state government jobs more appealing. Eligible employees can take this leave following the birth, adoption, or foster care of a child, or when facing a significant health condition. The initiative is seen as a pro-family step to enhance workforce retention and competitiveness. It is set to take effect as soon as next summer, benefiting approximately 30,500 executive branch employees.

Volunteers help Animal Care Society, a no-kill shelter, prepare expanded facilities
SUMMARY: The Animal Care Society (ACS) in Louisville is expanding its facilities, currently housing around 100 animals, including 50 cats and 50 dogs. Community members, including University of Louisville football players and volunteers, helped prepare a new building that will serve as the primary adoption center and cat area. ACS, Kentucky’s first no-kill shelter, has been operational for 40 years and aims to double its capacity to save more animals from euthanasia. The expansion is critical for providing homes to more animals and supporting local rescue organizations during crises. Volunteers dedicated four hours to this rewarding effort.
