SUMMARY: The U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging violations of children’s online privacy laws and infringements of a prior settlement with the FTC. The complaint claims that TikTok, despite being aware, allowed children under 13 to create accounts without parental consent, thus collecting their personal information. This also includes account data from its “Kids Mode.” The lawsuit, reflecting concerns about the platform’s practices since its merger with Musical.ly, seeks civil penalties and aims to prevent further violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Mississippi Senate advances its tax overhaul

www.wxxv25.com – WXXV Staff – 2025-02-21 12:48:00

SUMMARY: The Senate Finance Committee has advanced legislation to reduce Mississippi’s income tax and grocery sales tax while increasing the gasoline tax. Republican senators argue these changes will stimulate the economy, proposing to decrease the flat 4% income tax to 2.99% over four years. Democrats, however, claim this disproportionately benefits corporations and harms low-income individuals. The Senate’s plan represents a $326 million net tax cut, less than the House’s $1.1 billion proposal, which seeks complete income tax elimination. The Senate also aims to lower the grocery tax from 7% to 5% by July 2026 and raise the gasoline tax to address highway maintenance funding.
