SUMMARY: During the summer, fresh blueberries from our large patch are a staple snack, often enjoyed straight from the bush. Blueberry season starts around Memorial Day and ends by July 4th, with berries sometimes running out by late June. For later use, we freeze unwashed berries to prevent crystallization. Mother Nature manages the season, ensuring the right conditions and providing cleanup via birds. While we mostly eat raw fruit, we also enjoy blueberry recipes. Our friend Patricia Henderson shared a favorite: Blueberry Cream Cheese Muffins, easy to make and freeze. Enjoy this delicious treat! Recipe details provided.

SUMMARY: Feeding wildlife can be enjoyable, but it’s important to remember that many animals can find their own food and may become dependent on human assistance. Instead of feeding them directly, consider planting native plants that provide natural food sources like fruits, seeds, and insects. Examples include Wax Myrtle, Yaupon Holly, and American Beautyberry. For nectar-feeding birds, try Coral Honeysuckle or Red Buckeye. Creating a no-mow zone, brush piles, and other habitats can also provide shelter and food. While occasional feeding is fine, avoid processed foods, and opt for natural options like nuts for squirrels and fruits for turtles.
