Judge vacates her order for Clarksdale newspaper to remove editorial criticizing local leaders
SUMMARY: A Mississippi judge, Crystal Wise Martin, vacated her restraining order that forced the Clarksdale Press Register to remove a critical editorial after the city dropped its lawsuit against the paper. The editorial had criticized local officials for not notifying the newspaper about a meeting on a proposed tax on alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco. Free speech advocates condemned the original order as a violation of First Amendment rights. The city’s lawsuit claimed the editorial was libelous and detrimental to their lobbying efforts, while the newspaper faced support from organizations like the National Press Club and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

Mississippi State spirit squads bring home two national titles
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University’s spirit squads made a significant impact at the National Cheerleaders Association competition, where they won national championships in the Small Coed Intermediate D1A and Spirit Rally D1A divisions. Competing against over 80 athletes, the teams showcased a traditional coed routine and a game-day style performance. After two third-place finishes last year, the squads’ hard work paid off with two titles. They also had a successful showing in their inaugural National Dance Association competition, securing second and sixth place finishes. The university’s spirit director, Tiffany Fettinger, believes the success will continue to elevate the program’s reputation.

Congressman Thompson blasts SAVE Act, accuses GOP of promoting voter suppression
SUMMARY: Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson criticized the recently passed SAVE Act, arguing it doesn’t effectively secure elections but rather suppresses voter participation. Despite the GOP’s insistence on preventing noncitizen voting, Thompson highlighted that evidence suggests noncitizen influence on elections is minimal. The legislation requires proof of citizenship for voter registration, risking disenfranchisement for millions, particularly among marginalized groups. Thompson contends that the bill is a guise for suppressing votes and calls for Republicans to focus on genuine election security measures instead of pursuing partisan agendas. The SAVE Act may struggle in the Senate due to insufficient support.
