Leveling the playing field: UK students adapt books, toys for children with disabilities
SUMMARY: Playing is crucial for children’s development, but toys can be challenging for kids with disabilities. The University of Kentucky’s “Toys with a Purpose” program is addressing this issue by adapting toys for inclusivity. Collaborating with the College of Health Sciences, students contribute ideas to create free, usable toys for all children. Simple modifications, like adding knobs to puzzles or pull tabs to books, enable children to play together. Dr. Chuck Stamper, affected by muscular dystrophy, finds joy in seeing children enjoy toys they can use. The initiative aims to expand its reach by creating a community toolkit for adaptations across Kentucky.
