Judge rejects GOP challenge of Mississippi timeline for counting absentee ballots
SUMMARY: A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit from the Republican National Committee aimed at blocking Mississippi from counting absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day that are received up to five days afterward. U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. stated that Mississippi’s procedure aligns with federal law and does not violate the Elections Clause. This ruling follows a similar dismissal in Nevada. The Republican lawsuit argued that allowing late-received ballots dilutes valid votes, but the judge clarified that the counting process does not extend the election date. This practice is standard in several states that facilitate mail voting.
