Judge overturns Mississippi death penalty case
SUMMARY: A mother visited a lawyer’s office in August claiming her son was arrested and put in jail. A U.S. District Judge, Michael Mills, overturned the death penalty for a man convicted of murdering a store owner just outside of Grenada. The judge ruled that Mississippi must give Terry Pitchford a new trial on capital murder charges because the trial judge did not give the man’s lawyer enough chance to argue that the prosecution was dismissing black jurors for discriminatory reasons. This decision was made after the judge found evidence of discriminatory jury selection practices.

A federal judge has overturned the death penalty conviction of a Mississippi man stemming from a fatal store robbery in 2004.

SUMMARY: Mississippi House lawmakers failed to attend critical conference talks with the Senate, risking the demise of bills due to the filing deadline. Senate lawmakers arrived at the Capitol to ensure conference reports were filed, but House Speaker Jason White did not participate. Senate Appropriations Chairman Briggs Hopson cited a “roadblock” with the House docket room closed, preventing the filing of key bills, including those for the 2026 budget and child protective services. Speaker White stated the House would reconvene on Monday for an “open and transparent” process, offering to engage with the Senate in the coming days.
