Judge dismisses charges against father-son duo accused of shooting at Black FedEx driver
SUMMARY: Charges against Gregory and Brandon Case, accused of shooting at Black FedEx driver D’Monterrio Gibson in Brookhaven, have been dropped. In November 2022, the duo faced attempted murder and conspiracy charges, but a mistrial led to the dismissal of their cases due to the Brookhaven Police Department’s detective, Vincent Fernando, allegedly withholding crucial evidence. This included a videotaped interview with Gibson. The judge ruled the defendants were denied due process and a fair trial, citing “numerous intentional discovery violations.” Therefore, the Cases cannot be retried for these offenses, as their charges have been dismissed with prejudice.

‘We’ve still got a lot of work to do’: Jackson murder total decreases for third straight year
SUMMARY: In 2024, homicide rates in Jackson, Mississippi, declined for the third consecutive year, with 111 reported murders, a 5.93% decrease from 2023. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade emphasizes the need for continued investment in public safety, particularly in youth programs to address crime’s root causes. Despite progress, Jackson still has the highest murder rate per capita among U.S. cities at 77.24 per 100,000 residents. Wade urges community efforts to reduce violence, as many homicides stem from personal conflicts. The city has approved funding for resources to bolster police operations and improve safety amid ongoing challenges.

Show-cause hearing delayed as Public Service Commission investigates Holly Springs Utility Department
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Public Service Commission planned a show-cause hearing for Holly Springs concerning its utility services, prompted by customer complaints and alleged regulatory violations. Although the January 7 hearing was scheduled, Holly Springs requested a delay until after the 2025 legislative session due to a conflict involving its attorney. The state Supreme Court denied the delay, but Holly Springs sought a temporary restraining order. The commission criticized the city for a lack of cooperation and compliance with audits, noting HSUD’s poor performance and financial struggles. A new hearing date is yet to be set, as the situation continues to develop.

Trump’s idea to rename Gulf of Mexico resurfaces memories of Mississippi lawmaker who suggested it first
SUMMARY: President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” upon retaking office, a proposal reminiscent of a 2012 bill by Mississippi state Rep. Steve Holland. Holland’s proposal, intended as a spoof, faced backlash, especially from the Latino community. Trump praised the name’s “beautiful ring,” prompting U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to pledge support for legislation to enact the change. However, renaming the gulf poses significant challenges, including gaining consent from neighboring countries Mexico and Cuba, as well as the International Hydrographic Organization, making the proposal difficult to realize.
