Judge allows trial to be delayed for Jackson officials accused of blatant corruption

Jordan III granted a continuance, agreeing that the case is complex and both sides need more time to prepare. Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and Councilman Aaron Banks face charges in a bribery scheme to secure a contract for developers posing as FBI informants. While Owens, Lumumba, and Banks maintain their innocence, former Councilwoman Angelique Lee and others have pleaded guilty. A new trial date will be set after additional preparations..

Would bringing a casino to Jackson open Pandora’s box? Expert thinks so
SUMMARY: Mississippi officials are considering building a casino in Jackson to boost economic development and tourism. In March, House Bill 1989 proposed a program to finance a gaming center downtown, but it failed to pass. A coalition of business leaders, including former Gov. Haley Barbour, has since advocated for a casino in Jackson, citing the city’s population decline and the growing suburbs. However, state law restricts casinos to coastal or river areas, so legislative changes would be needed. Some industry leaders oppose the idea, fearing it could lead to more casinos in other cities and hurt existing establishments.
