Judge allows trial to be delayed for Jackson officials accused of blatant corruption
SUMMARY: A federal judge has delayed the trial for three Jackson public officials involved in a corruption case related to a proposed real estate development. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III granted a continuance, agreeing that the case is complex and both sides need more time to prepare. Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and Councilman Aaron Banks face charges in a bribery scheme to secure a contract for developers posing as FBI informants. While Owens, Lumumba, and Banks maintain their innocence, former Councilwoman Angelique Lee and others have pleaded guilty. A new trial date will be set after additional preparations..

Missing shrimper’s body found after Coast Guard calls off search
SUMMARY: Richard Kopszywa, a 75-year-old Biloxi shrimper, was reported missing after his wife hadn’t heard from him following a fishing trip. The U.S. Coast Guard found his abandoned boat about five miles from the Biloxi coast and searched over 1,000 nautical square miles using multiple vessels and aircraft. After the search was called off, paddleboarders discovered Kopszywa’s body, which was later confirmed by authorities. Initially, the Biloxi Police Department was uncertain about the identification, but the county coroner validated it later that day. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and Gulf Islands National Seashore assisted in the search efforts.

Scientists ‘surprised’ to find 4 rare dolphins dead on Mississippi barrier island
SUMMARY: Four Pantropical Spotted Dolphins, a rare sight in the Mississippi Sound, were found beached on Petit Bois Island last Saturday. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) responded to the report, considering the stranding event unusual as it involved four dolphins of the same species. Samples and photographs were collected for analysis. The dolphins were taken to IMMS labs for further evaluation, and necropsies will be performed with the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine to determine the cause of their deaths. Anyone encountering stranded aquatic creatures should contact the IMMS Stranding Hotline at 1-888-767-3657.
