JPS gets grant to expand security efforts

SUMMARY: Jackson has received a federal grant of over $515,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services program to enhance campus security. Chief Charles McInnis announced that this will enable the hiring of approximately four new sworn to serve as School Resource Officers (SROs). The current safety team comprises 109 members, police officers and safety staff, working closely with the Jackson Police Department. Chief McInnis emphasized that more officers in schools helps reduce violence and fosters trust, as often share valuable information with them. The team responds to nearly 37,000 calls annually.

Additionally, Nooba Central’s season ended with a loss to the Gators, 3-0. However, the Lake Hornets triumphed over St. Andrew’s Episcopal, securing a spot in the State Championship with a 3-1 victory. Congratulations to the Hornets, who will compete on Thursday at noon!

Lauderdale County 2024 Property Taxes increasing by 20%

However, individuals over 65 years old are exempt from the increase unless there’s a change in the millage rate, a enacted two years ago. Tax assessments are required every four years, which necessitated this adjustment.
