Jackson water regionalization bill is changed by Mississippi committee

Jackson may be able to keep ownership of its water system, even if control of it is taken over by a regional authority, after changes were made to the main bill to regionalize the cities troubled water system Tuesday.

The original version of Senate Bill 2889, as written by Sen. David Parker, R-Olive Branch, and the version that passed the Senate last month, would have given ownership of the system to a new regional authority. Then, after conversations between Parker and Rep. Shanda Yates, I-Jackson, that was changed by the House Public Utilities Committee.

Test-Taking Solution Foundation English-Language Arts Bootcamp

In the past year or so, Jackson area students and parents have been impacted by switching between in-person and virtual learning due to the Jackson water crisis, inclement weather and COVID-19.

For instance, the Jackson Public School District went to virtual learning on the first day of spring semester this year, after reporting Jan. 4 that more than half of its schools had low or no water pressure.

All of that switching between virtual and in-person schooling has impacted students’ learning patterns.

Jackson, MS, to host Zoo Camp for Spring Break

The Jackson Zoo is hosting a Spring Break camp March 13-16.

The Jackson Zoo Spring Break Camp, a popular program for youth ages 6 through 12, is back for 2023 for the first time in several years.

Angela White, Jackson Zoo recreation manager and development director, said the camp was started about seven years ago but was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and management transitions at the historic zoological park.

The camp will be held daily from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday, March 13, through Thursday, March 16.
