SUMMARY: The National Science Foundation has awarded $300,000 to Jackson State University for a STEM project focused on improving tumor therapy outcomes. The project, led by Professor Jian-Ge Zhou, aims to use machine learning to determine which atoms in a light emitter contribute most to its efficiency, ultimately improving bio-imaging devices. The project also aims to advance knowledge of machine learning and thermolysis, and assist in the synthesis of new light emitters for better bioluminescent imaging and tumor therapy. The grant supports STEM research and undergraduate education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Cleveland business owner found guilty of COVID relief fraud

SUMMARY: Ethel Cain, owner of Lifeline Financial Freedom Solutions in Cleveland, Mississippi, has pleaded guilty to defrauding a government COVID stimulus program. She submitted nearly $400,000 in fraudulent grant applications to the Mississippi Development Authority for the CARES Act “Back to Business” program. Despite submitting multiple requests, most were denied, leading to an investigation by the state auditor’s office. Agents identified $38,500 in improper grant payments to her company. This is the first COVID stimulus fraud case handled by State Auditor Shad White’s office. Cain awaits her sentencing date following her conviction by a Bolivar County jury.

Ridgeland health insurance company, local nonprofit collaborate to feed hungry on Thanksgiving

SUMMARY: Shared Health, a Ridgeland-based health insurance company, is partnering with Mississippi nonprofit food bank Extra Table to assist needy families for Thanksgiving. They are donating 9,000 chickens and 12,600 boxes of Louisiana Fish Fry Cornbread Stuffing Mix to 59 food pantry partners across five cities for the Henny 500 event. Each pantry will receive around 150 chickens and 210 boxes of stuffing mix. Extra Table’s Executive Director, Martha Allen, expressed gratitude for Shared Health’s support in combating hunger. Shared Health’s CEO, John Cole, emphasized the importance of helping families celebrate the holidays with traditional meals. Donations to Extra Table are welcomed.

Four locked up following investigation into online child predators in Mississippi

Led by Attorney General Lynn Fitch, the operation involved various law enforcement agencies targeting individuals attempting to lure children online or distribute child pornography. Authorities executed nine search warrants and developed numerous leads that could lead to further arrests. Fitch praised the collaborative efforts of investigators and law enforcement in protecting communities and preventing further harm from predators. The operation was hosted by the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office and involved several federal and local agencies.
