Jackson prepares for cold weather
SUMMARY: The city of Jackson, Mississippi is preparing for two rounds of severe weather, including arctic temperatures, early next week. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has announced plans to open one gym and two other facilities as shelters for unhoused individuals and anyone who needs a warm place to stay during the frigid cold weather. The Red Cross, Shower Power, and the People’s Advocacy Institute will staff and manage the shelter. The Jackson Police Department is also planning to switch its patrol division to 12-hour shifts and put more personnel on patrol duty to increase the city’s presence during the severe weather.
