It’s not clear who will lead the Pentagon when Trump takes office. What happens then?
SUMMARY: As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his inauguration, uncertainty looms over leadership changes at the Pentagon. With top military leaders set to step down, officials have yet to announce an acting defense secretary, leaving Army, Navy, and Air Force chiefs to potentially fill gaps due to unfilled civilian positions. The Senate Armed Services Committee is expected to vote on Trump’s nominee, Pete Hegseth, but a full Senate confirmation may take time. Concerns over policy shifts, particularly regarding diversity programs, may affect military leadership stability as the new administration seeks to reshape defense priorities.

What it’s like to share a name with a president
SUMMARY: Many individuals share names with famous U.S. presidents, leading to unique experiences. Donald Trump from Alabama enjoys free upgrades and meals due to his name, while William J. Clinton, a Tennessee resident, has received mistaken letters from inmates seeking presidential pardons. Each shares amusing anecdotes about daily encounters and first impressions connected to their names, like being questioned for identity verification. Abraham Lincoln from Washington state sees his name as a double-edged sword, often making an impression but requiring him to stay on top of his game. Grover Cleveland from Pennsylvania often faces confusion at stores due to his name.

Bribery, fraud charges dropped against former New York Lt. Governor
SUMMARY: Federal prosecutors dropped bribery and fraud charges against former New York Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin due to the death of key cooperating witness Gerald Migdol. Judge J. Paul Oetken closed Benjamin’s case after prosecutors determined they could no longer prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Migdol, who had pleaded guilty to organizing fake campaign contributions for Benjamin’s failed city comptroller bid, died on February 9, 2024. Benjamin’s legal team expressed relief and cited a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. about justice. Benjamin resigned following his April 2022 arrest, which had created political turmoil for Gov. Kathy Hochul.

US lawsuit accuses Pepsi company of price discrimination that favored Walmart over smaller stores
SUMMARY: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued PepsiCo, alleging illegal price discrimination by offering unfair price advantages to Walmart over other retailers. The FTC claims PepsiCo’s promotional payments to Walmart allowed it to lower prices while raising costs for consumers shopping elsewhere. PepsiCo strongly disputes the allegations, asserting its practices align with industry norms. The FTC sued under the 1936 Robinson-Patman Act, which prevents such favoritism. The lawsuit has sparked division within the FTC, with two commissioners dissenting, one calling the case rushed and lacking evidence. This action is part of broader efforts to address consumer protection and market fairness.
