'It's a dying industry if something doesn't change': Seafood Labeling Act in effect in Alabama
SUMMARY: In response to a controversy over seafood authenticity, Alabama has enacted a Seafood Labeling Act, mandating restaurants and grocery stores to clearly label the origin of their seafood. Effective since October 1st, the law aims to support local shrimpers facing challenges from cheaper imported seafood. Mayor Henry Barnes expressed concern over the declining industry, with a significant number of shrimpers selling their boats instead of shrimp. Tammy Hall of Sea Harvest, which now sells directly to consumers, highlighted the financial struggles. The law requires clear labeling of seafood source, with penalties for non-compliance, providing hope for a revival in local seafood sales.
A new seafood labeling law has been in effect for roughly three weeks in Alabama, requiring restaurants and stores to clearly label whether the seafood is imported or domestic and whether its wild or farmed raised.
