Is Lafayette regaining its economic swagger? – The Current
SUMMARY: In December, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released county-level GDP data, showing Lafayette Parish’s economy grew faster than both the U.S. and Louisiana averages, with a 3.3% growth compared to the national 2.9%. Since 2019, Lafayette’s GDP grew by 7.5%, though still 5.2% lower than its 2014 oil boom peak. Despite these positive trends, Lafayette lags behind national growth, with a 29.1% increase since 2001, compared to the U.S. at 59.3%. Economic health relies on more than GDP, but Lafayette must not be complacent, leveraging opportunities to grow beyond oil and gas dependence for a more stable future.

Abortion-rights organizers talk failed ballot measures and what’s next • Louisiana Illuminator
SUMMARY: Most abortion-rights ballot measures succeeded this year, but some failed for the first time since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Efforts in Arkansas, Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska faced significant challenges. In Arkansas, a proposed abortion amendment was disqualified over signature issues, while in Florida, despite heavy funding, the measure fell short of the required 60% approval. South Dakota’s effort lacked national support and resources, leading to defeat. Nebraska saw a restrictive abortion amendment prevail. Activists from these campaigns, despite setbacks, remain committed to continuing their fight for reproductive rights in future elections.

SUMMARY: WDSU has released new footage of a crash caused by alleged shoplifter Shaneka Smith, leading to the deaths of two teenagers, 17-year-olds Giselle Smith and Semaj Morris. Smith, who was accused of stealing six Gucci scarves from Saks Fifth Avenue before a chase, is facing charges. The crash occurred on December 11 after deputies initiated a brief pursuit of her vehicle. The high-speed incident resulted in tragic fatalities over mere dollars in stolen goods, prompting demands for accountability from the victims’ families. New Orleans police may issue an arrest warrant for another suspect involved in the theft.
Joneaka Smooth, 31, is now facing charges for allegedly shoplifting on the afternoon of Dec. 11, hours before deputies said she caused a deadly crash.
