IRS seeking volunteers for tax assistance programs aimed at helping needy
SUMMARY: Federal officials in Mississippi are recruiting volunteers for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. These initiatives assist low-to-moderate-income taxpayers, including underserved populations like seniors and those with disabilities, by providing free tax preparation services. No prior experience is needed, as the IRS offers free training. Volunteers can take on various roles, including tax preparation, interpreting, and greeters, and can work at flexible times in-person or virtually. Interested individuals can find more information and local service sites through the VITA Locator Tool.

Southern Miss parts ways with offensive coordinator Chip Long amid dismal season
SUMMARY: Southern Miss football has fired offensive coordinator Chip Long following a disappointing 2024 season. Interim head coach Reed Stringer announced the decision during a press conference, emphasizing it was necessary for the team’s interests. Long was hired to improve an offense struggling post the loss of star running back Frank Gore, Jr. However, the team is currently 1-8, averaging just over 16 points per game while allowing 34. Stringer acknowledged the need for changes to break the losing streak. Long’s prior coaching experience includes roles at various notable programs, but he failed to impact the Golden Eagles positively.
