Invest 97L update: Tropical wave may ride Florida's Gulf coast
SUMMARY: Fox 35 News discusses significant developments regarding a tropical wave affecting Florida. Meteorologist Brooks Garner highlights a shift in modeling, indicating potential heavy rainfall this weekend as the system drifts over Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico. Despite remaining weak due to Saharan dust, forecasts project rainfall between 12 to 20 inches in some areas, raising concerns for flooding and isolated severe weather. The European model has changed its stance, now suggesting the system will remain in the Gulf rather than moving along the East Coast. Preparations for rain and possible tornado threats are advised across Florida.

The National Hurricane Center has deemed a tropical disturbance as Invest 97L — and the latest models indicate it could head into the Gulf of Mexico, near Florida’s Gulf coast.

Turkey arrests Swedish journalist over alleged terrorist connections to a pro-Kurdish group
SUMMARY: Turkish authorities arrested Swedish journalist Joakim Medin upon his arrival at Istanbul airport, charging him with “membership in a terrorist organization” and “insulting the president.” Medin, from Dagens ETC, was detained after he allegedly participated in a January 2023 rally in Stockholm supporting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which Turkey labels a terrorist group. The Turkish Presidency’s Counter Disinformation Center stated the arrest was not due to his journalistic work. Following the recent nationwide protests, over a dozen journalists have been detained as part of a crackdown on media coverage in Turkey.

Republicans look to maintain majority in Congress ahead of Florida special election
SUMMARY: Republicans are focusing on upcoming special elections in Florida to maintain their slim majority in Congress following Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s surprise withdrawal from her ambassador nomination. The party aims to cut taxes and reduce government size but faces uncertainty, as two special House elections in strong Republican districts are tighter than anticipated. While some Republicans express optimism about winning the contests, House Speaker Mike Johnson is cautious about numbers after past losses and delayed the bill’s passage timeline. Conservative members are wary of Senate colleagues regarding a new bill framework, emphasizing the need to keep their budget resolution intact.

In the aftermath of the surprise withdraw of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s nomination as U.S. Ambassador, Congressional Republicans now turn their focus to upcoming special elections right here in Florida to keep their majority.
