Interview: Non-profit talks about national bed crisis affecting children

SUMMARY: Beds for Kids is a nonprofit organization that provides beds, mattresses, and bedding to children in need who do not have a bed to sleep in. Started by Stanley Hudleston in 2018, the organization has delivered over 3600 beds and continues to serve around 100 children every month. The volunteers build beds every Monday morning at Mount Olive Baptist Church and deliver them to children across Tennessee and the Delta region. The organization’s goal is to ensure that every child has a proper place to sleep, as sleeping on the floor or in a chair is heartbreaking. Parents are encouraged to reach out for assistance, especially during the summer months when the need is even greater.

Tupelo waiting on Target to make decision on new store

Volunteers requested for local “Grow-a-Row” program to combat hunger

SUMMARY: A local nonprofit, Petal Healing Garden, is collaborating with the Forest County Agricultural Extension Office on the Grow a Row program to combat food insecurity. Volunteers can participate after completing a food safety course led by Jesse Tisdale. The program not only helps with food donations but also offers a chance for the community to reconnect with gardening, filling a gap left by the loss of agricultural education in local schools. Proceeds from the initiative will benefit the Edwards Street food pantry and the Petal Children’s Task Force in Hattiesburg.

One local agricultural extension office is teaming up with a local vegetable garden owner to train others on growing produce to combat hunger in the Pine Belt.
