Internships and early starts encouraged by workforce organizations | Louisiana
SUMMARY: Louisiana faces significant workforce challenges, with more job openings than unemployed individuals and 68% of positions requiring post-secondary education. High school internships and apprenticeships are crucial in preparing students for high-demand careers, contributing to the state’s goal of achieving a 60% postsecondary credential attainment rate by 2030. Currently at 51%, Louisiana needs to increase the number of credential earners from 73,000 to 85,000 annually. Business leaders are urged to expand internship opportunities, linking education with workforce readiness. These initiatives aim to boost skills in key industries and reduce youth unemployment, creating a stronger future for Louisiana’s economy.

The Breakdown: Extradition of NY doctor unlikely in Louisiana abortion case
SUMMARY: Dr. Margaret Carpenter, a New York doctor, and the mother of a pregnant teen were indicted by a Louisiana grand jury in January for allegedly violating the state’s abortion laws. Prosecutors claim Dr. Carpenter mailed abortion pills to Louisiana, where the drugs are classified as controlled substances. Louisiana’s Attorney General, Liz Merl, is pursuing extradition, but New York’s 2023 Shield Law may protect Dr. Carpenter. This law prevents New York authorities from cooperating with out-of-state investigations or prosecutions regarding abortion pills, making extradition unlikely. Despite this, Merl warned Dr. Carpenter to be cautious when traveling.
