Indicted former Mississippi town alderman's attorney says debt already paid
SUMMARY: Charlie Roberts, a former alderman of Horn Lake, Mississippi, has been indicted for unemployment compensation fraud. His attorney, Tony Farese, claimed that Roberts had already repaid $16,948 to the state for overpayment received during the pandemic while he was still employed. The payment cleared on July 23, 2024. Despite this, Roberts was indicted with a total demand of over $23,000. After his indictment, Roberts was released on a $7,500 bond. Farese criticized the state auditor’s office for not acknowledging the repayment, while the district attorney deferred questions to the Mississippi Department of Employment Services.
