‘I’m not going to resign’: Rankin sheriff responds to former deputies pleading guilty in brutality case
SUMMARY: Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey has held a press conference in response to the guilty pleas of six former law enforcement officers, five of whom served in his department, for beating, torturing, and sexually assaulting two Black men earlier this year. Bailey expressed his surprise at the evidence uncovered during the investigation and stated that all former deputies had lied to him. Despite calls for his resignation, Bailey said he would not step down and vowed to fix the problems within his department. He has implemented new policies, such as updating the body camera policy, to rebuild trust in the sheriff’s office. A private firm staffed with former FBI agents will also conduct an independent audit of the department’s policies and procedures. The former officers who pled guilty are awaiting sentencing, with some facing a maximum sentence of life.
