Hurricane Rafael strengthens to Category 2 storm, Florida Keys under tropical storm warning
SUMMARY: Hurricane Raphael has intensified to a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph, likely reaching Category 3 strength before landfall near Havana, Cuba. Fortunately, the storm will miss our region, traveling northward towards the Gulf of Mexico. While we won’t face direct impacts, we can expect some indirect effects, including increased tropical air and enhanced rain, leading to a wet morning commute in areas like Bard County and near Disney. Rain and breezy conditions are anticipated, with Raphael ultimately weakening as it approaches the coast later this weekend.
FOX 35 Storm Team Meteorologist provides the latest forecast as Hurricane Rafael has strengthened to a Category 2 storm.

Scott cruises to U.S. Senate reelection victory in Florida | Florida
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., secured a second term with a significant 1.38 million vote margin, receiving 55.73% of the 10.54 million ballots cast, against former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who garnered 42.65%. Scott’s victory contrasts with his narrow win in 2018, where he received only 50.1%. He achieved success in various counties, including Miami-Dade and even in traditionally Democratic areas like Palm Beach. Scott celebrated his win on social media, expressing gratitude and pledging to work on improving Washington. His performance mirrored President Trump‘s strong showing in the same election cycle.

Floridians reject recreational marijuana, abortion rights | Florida
SUMMARY: Florida voters rejected two key ballot initiatives supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis: Amendment 3, which proposed a recreational cannabis program, and Amendment 4, aimed at enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution. Amendment 3 received 55.75% approval and Amendment 4 garnered 57.02%, but both failed to meet the 60% threshold required for passage. Notably, former NFL coach Tony Dungy praised the outcomes, emphasizing the protection of unborn lives. Out of the six amendments on the ballot, only two passed: Amendment 5, modifying homestead exemptions, and Amendment 2, establishing a right to fish and hunt.

Former President Trump watch party
SUMMARY: Former President Donald Trump is awaiting results at his watch party in Palm Beach after voting and addressing voters. He emphasized immigration and border security as key issues, downplaying inflation as a second concern. Trump reiterated his opposition to Amendment 4, which seeks to codify abortion protections, stating the current six-week ban is insufficient. As supporters arrive gradually, the focus remains on whether Trump will appear based on the election outcomes. The atmosphere is filled with uncertainty as attendees await results that could shape the future political landscape for 2024.
