Hurricane Milton surges back to Category 5 storm as Florida prepares for landfall
SUMMARY: Floridians are urged to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton, a threatening Category 5 storm projected to impact Tampa Bay. Mayor Jane Castor warned residents that staying in evacuation zones could be fatal, and President Biden has prioritized federal resources to assist. Many towns, especially Fort Myers, are taking precautions, with businesses boarding up and residents heeding evacuation orders. However, some, like a woman from Sanibel Island, choose to stay. Curfews are in place to enhance safety, and officials are prepared to respond only after winds decrease. Around 3 million people are under evacuation orders, with major transportation hubs closing.
Hurricane Milton is on a path toward Florida’s west coast after surging back into a Category 5 storm Tuesday evening, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene hit the state. Tampa’s mayor warned of a direct hit and urged people to follow evacuation protocols Monday. CBS News correspondent Nicole Valdes has more on how residents are responding and CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports on those still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

Estimated 24.6 million TV viewers watched inauguration coverage, smallest audience since 2013
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s second inauguration attracted 24.6 million TV viewers, the smallest audience since Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013. Viewership was lower compared to Trump’s first inauguration (30.6 million) and Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration (33.8 million). Inauguration coverage varied in length, with the extended broadcast likely lowering the average viewership as audiences tuned out over time. Fox News led with 10.3 million viewers during Trump’s swearing-in and speech, while other networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC had significantly fewer viewers. In contrast, Biden’s 2021 inauguration saw stronger viewership on CNN and MSNBC compared to Fox News.

DeSantis urges caution as northwest Florida hit by rare winter storm | Florida
SUMMARY: A rare snow and ice storm is impacting northwestern Florida, prompting officials to advise people to avoid travel. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for the region, activating toll waivers and road closures. Snow and ice accumulation is expected across several cities, including 2 to 4 inches in Pensacola. The state is deploying 250 workers and 200 pieces of equipment, including snow plows, to clear roads. DeSantis urged residents to stay indoors and let authorities handle the storm. Local road closures are up to county officials, and electric cooperatives can receive state assistance to restore power.
