Lieutenant Colonel Shawn Cross, who experienced the storm both as an aviator and a resident, recounted his recollections of flying reconnaissance missions while watching the hurricane intensify over the Gulf. Upon returning home, he was shocked by the destruction and the lack of communication as evacuation efforts unfolded. The aftermath brought a mix of emotions, evolving from shock to gratitude, as communities united to rebuild and recover from the devastation, a transformative experience for many involved.
