Huge turnout so far for first day of early voting
SUMMARY: Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger held a news conference to highlight early voting, noting a record-breaking start with over 71,000 ballots cast before 10:30 AM. He emphasized improvements in the voting process to build public trust, stating, “Every vote matters because every voter matters.” Both presidential campaigns urge early voting, with former President Trump rallying in Cobb County and participating in a Fox News Town Hall. Vice President Kamala Harris plans a rally in Atlanta. Early voting runs through November 1, with Election Day set for November 5. Key dates include the last absentee ballot request by October 25.

Trump says he may withhold federal aid for Los Angeles fires
SUMMARY: President Trump threatened to withhold federal disaster aid from wildfire-affected Los Angeles unless California changes its water management practices, blaming Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom for the state’s struggles with wildfires. In a Fox News interview, he reiterated false claims about fish conservation efforts causing water shortages. As Trump prepares for a presidential visit to California, he also discussed reforming FEMA and met with endangered House Republicans, seeking unity amidst internal party disagreements. Additionally, he nominated Andrew Puzder for EU ambassador and Sean Curran as head of the Secret Service, while suggesting investigations into President Biden.

Georgia lawmakers looking to address House Bill 581 opt-out | Georgia
SUMMARY: Georgia lawmakers are considering legislation to address local governments opting out of House Bill 581, which freezes property assessments at the rate of inflation. The bill was approved by 63% of voters in November, but some entities, including Oglethorpe and Gwinnett counties, have opted out, citing reasons like maintaining educational services or local homestead exemptions. Local governments must hold public hearings to file their intent to opt out by March 1. Critics, like the Tax Foundation, warn the bill could negatively impact the housing market by discouraging homeowners from selling and complicating new construction. Some governments are still deciding.

Historic Deep South snow: The science behind it
SUMMARY: A winter storm on Tuesday brought unprecedented snowfall to the Gulf Coast, with cities breaking long-standing records. Milton, Florida saw 9 inches, more than double the state’s previous snowfall record of 4 inches. New Orleans recorded 10 inches, and Mobile, Alabama, saw 8 inches. Northern Florida, including Tallahassee, experienced heavy snow, with some areas nearing all-time snowfall records. The unusual weather was caused by a displaced Polar Vortex and a stalled front, which allowed cold air to move south, while warm, moist air created snow due to “overrunning” effects. Climate change’s role in this event remains uncertain.
