HUD sending $1.1 million to help Mississippians in assisted housing

SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is allocating over $1 million to Mississippi to support those seeking financial independence. As part of a $44 million nationwide initiative, the grant includes $140,662 for Choctaw Housing Authority, $478,500 for Meridian Housing Authority Housing Development Corporation, $239,250 for Natchez Housing Authority, and $247,500 for Okolona Housing Authority. HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman emphasized the program’s role in providing a foundation for personal and financial growth. The funding comes through the Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Coordinator Program to hire coordinators who assess and address resident needs.

Rep. Trent Kelly celebrates retirement from military with ceremony in capitol

Giant ‘sea dragon’ fossil discovered in Mississippi, believed to be largest in state history

SUMMARY: A team from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality discovered a mosasaur vertebra in Oktibbeha County on April 15, 2025, representing one of the largest sea dragons of the late Cretaceous period. The fossil, found in the Prairie Bluff Formation, likely belonged to Mosasaurus hoffmanni, a massive marine predator that could grow up to 50 feet long and weigh 20,000 pounds. Known for its dagger-like teeth, this apex predator dominated the seas while dinosaurs ruled the land. This find marks the largest mosasaur fossil recorded in Mississippi and is now part of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science’s collection.
