Houston-area midwife, man arrested for allegedly performing illegal abortions
SUMMARY: A Houston-area midwife, Maria Roas, has been arrested and charged with two felonies: performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license. This marks the first criminal charge related to Texas’s abortion ban since it took effect. The state’s Attorney General alleges that Roas operated clinics employing unlicensed individuals who misrepresented themselves as medical professionals. While the specifics of the alleged illegal abortions remain unclear, it could set a precedent for future cases in Texas. Another employee, 29-year-old Jose Lei, is also charged, with both suspects’ bonds set at $700,000 as the case moves to a grand jury.
