Houston-area attorney ‘resigns’ license after clients claim he stole settlement checks
SUMMARY: David Pettis, a Houston personal injury attorney, has resigned his law license amid theft allegations involving stolen client settlement checks. Following a KPRC2 investigation in January and several victims’ testimonies in March, Pettis claims he is stepping down to prevent his family’s bankruptcy, denying any wrongdoing and attributing complaints to dissatisfied former clients. Despite being found liable in multiple malpractice lawsuits, he has not faced criminal charges. Victims express frustration over missing funds, with one stating she has not received $60,000 owed after a car crash. The Texas Supreme Court must still accept his resignation, which would be treated as a disbarment.

More than six months after KPRC 2 exposed a Houston-area attorney accused of stealing settlement checks from his clients who had been injured in car accidents, the longtime attorney tells reporter Bryce Newberry he has decided to resign his license.
