House passes bill bringing Mississippi one step closer to legalizing mobile sports betting
SUMMARY: The Mississippi House of Representatives has passed House Bill 774, aiming to legalize mobile sports betting for those 21 and over, allowing bets to be placed via mobile devices beyond casino premises. Under the bill, mobile betting platforms must partner exclusively with a Mississippi casino, though casinos can have multiple platform partnerships. The bill, designed to protect casino revenues and address industry concerns, requires wagers to ultimately be with the casinos, which collect the revenue and pay taxes. An amendment may direct taxes from mobile betting to state road and bridge funds. This move could align Mississippi with other states that have legalized mobile sports betting, given further legislative approval and endorsement by the governor.

The House passed the bill with a strong bipartisan vote of 88-24. Hopson indicated that the Senate’s approach will address broader fiscal concerns, including the impact on public infrastructure and future Medicaid expenses. As discussions progress, both chambers are navigating the complexities of tax policy and potential Medicaid expansion amid ongoing funding challenges.
