SUMMARY: A few years ago, aiming to address Mississippi’s economic challenges, we met an economist. Over time, Mississippi’s unemployment fell to 3.3%, but we face a new goal: increasing our labor force participation rate. With it at only 53.8%, the lowest in the US and well below the national average, we’re approaching a risky situation where half the population may sustain the other half. High educational attainment is linked to employment; thus, we’ve focused on improving education, including offering last-dollar tuition for community colleges. Health is another focus, as it’s tied to employment; we’re working to make healthcare more accessible and affordable. The state can’t create jobs, but it can foster a business-friendly environment; efforts included tax cuts and infrastructure investments. Personal responsibility is also emphasized. Despite past declines, we’re optimistic, dedicated to systemic changes for a brighter future.

The dismissal, announced by Trump-appointed officials, did not provide specific reasons, although state attorneys argued that Metcalfe was not covered by civil rights laws.
