Homelessness issue continuing to grow in South Mississippi
SUMMARY: Homelessness is rising in South Mississippi, with more people panhandling and living in tents. Back Bay Mission Executive Director Reverend James Pennington discusses this trend, emphasizing improved data collection and increasing numbers at drop-in centers. Key causes of homelessness include substance abuse, mental illness, traumatic events, and a small group choosing to live off the grid. Pennington highlights initiatives like transportable bedrooms and tiny home villages as potential solutions. The Mercy Cross project, which provides services like food and medical care while allowing camping, is also seen positively. Ocean Springs Fresh Market sees brisk business despite heat
SUMMARY: Despite the blazing heat and humidity, people are visiting Ocean Springs to purchase local goods at the Fresh Market, one of 16 certified farmers markets in Mississippi. This certification ensures that actual farmers grow the crops and all non-farm items are made or grown by the vendors. Farmers report that the heat has affected crop growth and business, with this year's crop being shorter due to early onset of high temperatures in June. Everything is ripening quickly and won't last long. Deal Farms from Grand Bay, Alabama, has been participating in the Ocean Springs Fresh Market for seven years.
