SUMMARY: Hinds County Election Commission is facing a shortage of poll workers ahead of the November 5th elections, currently having only about 75% of the needed workforce. Each of the 107 polling places requires a minimum of five workers, with some locations needing more due to high voter registration. Chairwoman Shirley Varnado noted that many older, experienced poll managers are hesitant to return after experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, interest from younger individuals is growing, and increased pay for poll workers, approved by the legislature, is expected to encourage more sign-ups, ultimately ensuring adequate staffing for the elections.
