SUMMARY: Mississippi is beginning to fund mental health courts that aim to help individuals suffering from mental health disorders obtain treatment and a safe lifestyle without incarceration. The program, piloted by the Hinds County Circuit Court, aims to reduce the number of nonviolent offenders held pretrial who may have mental illnesses. The program will follow a similar structure to drug courts, with individuals progressing through levels and being required to have employment and do community service. Unlike drug courts, individuals in the mental health courts will be allowed to take necessary medications. Funding of $300,000 has been awarded to Hinds County to provide treatment and healthcare services. Contracts should be in place within the next 90 days.
