Jackson to fight takeover of Smith-Wills Stadium
SUMMARY: The City of Jackson has decided against transferring the deed of Smith-Wills Stadium to the state, despite an order from Attorney General Lynn Fitch. During a recent City Council meeting, City Attorney Drew Martin noted that the state has not clarified the reasons behind the alleged breach of the original 1944 deed. Fitch’s directive is based on House Bill 1983, claiming the deed’s terms, specifying the land must be used for park purposes, have been violated. The city intends to contest the action, facing a September 30, 2024 deadline before potential legal consequences arise.
