SUMMARY: Week one of high school football is approaching, but there may be some changes to the start times of games due to high temperatures. The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) has announced that teams can change the start times from 7pm to as late as 8pm, as long as both teams agree and inform the officials. Heat timeouts have been used in previous years, but this weekend officials have the option to have more than one per quarter. Teams have been using a heat guideline called the wet bulb Globe temperature (WBGT) during summer practices.

SUMMARY: In Jackson’s Democratic mayoral primary, Senator John Horn nearly avoided a runoff despite low voter turnout. Horn will face incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in a runoff on April 22nd, after securing over 7,000 more votes than Lumumba. Many voters, including some who typically lean Republican, supported Horn for his hard campaigning and ability to get things done. However, Horn’s vote share fell short of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff. The winner of the runoff will advance to the June 3rd general election. Voters are seeking a mayor who is transparent and effective in managing city resources.
