Heidelberg to hold special election to select new mayor
SUMMARY: Heidelberg is preparing for a special election on September 5th to replace Mayor David Taylor, who passed away on July 14th. Taylor, who was elected in 2021, had a term set to end in June 2025. The election requires a petition signed by 15 people, a reduction from the usual 50 due to its emergency status. Five candidates have expressed interest: Jonathan Wilson, Rodarius Robert Barnett, Lynen Hair, Shauna Taylor (Taylor’s widow), and another person. Candidates must have lived in the city for two years to qualify. Applications are due by August 15th, and the election will take place at the Town Hall from 7 AM to 7 PM.

SUMMARY: Clear skies are expected for a pleasant evening. In breaking news, Jerry Banks, 42, has been arrested for the alleged murder of his mother, 63-year-old Louise Tornes. Police reported that Tornes died from blunt-force trauma on Wednesday, prompting the issuance of a murder warrant for her son. Banks was taken into custody by Precinct Three officers and the Action Unit at 11 A.M. today. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Germantown Mavericks triumphed over Canton High 31-6, and Ridgeland Titans beat Florence Eagles 24-3. Canton Academy celebrated a 41-8 win against West Memphis Christian, and Hartfield Academy dominated Cathedral 49-0. The show’s standout player was Madison St. Joe’s Drew Wamble.
