Head of Mississippi Hospital Association speaks on another round of Medicaid expansion debate
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are revisiting the issue of Medicaid expansion, which they failed to resolve earlier this year. House Speaker Jason White and Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann plan to address the topic when the legislative session resumes in January. A significant obstacle was House Democrats’ skepticism about federal approval for a proposed work requirement. However, the head of the State Hospital Association believes recent election results may facilitate the proposal’s acceptance by federal agencies. Despite support for expanding Medicaid to aid low-income individuals and hospitals, Governor Tate Reeves opposes it, presenting a challenge for lawmakers seeking to override his veto.
Mississippi lawmakers are expected to bring up Medicaid expansion during the next legislative session.

Tropical Update 11/7/24
SUMMARY: Chief Meteorologist Patrick Bigby provided a tropical update, noting that Hurricane Raphael is currently a category 2 storm in the Gulf of Mexico, 260 miles from Havana, Cuba, with winds at 105 mph. Moving west, it is expected to encounter dry air and strong wind shear, which will weaken the storm significantly. The forecast indicates uncertainty in its path, with models showing it could dip south or curve north, potentially leading to quicker dissipation. Overall, Bigby reassured that while monitoring is necessary, there is no significant cause for concern as the storm is unlikely to last.
