Hawley, Arab American Institute leader spar over antisemitism on college campuses | National
SUMMARY: During a Senate Judiciary hearing on hate crimes, Senator Josh Hawley questioned Maya Berry, director of the Arab American Institute, about antisemitism on college campuses, particularly regarding Palestinian protests. Hawley challenged Berry on the meaning of โIntifadaโ and related signs, asserting they signify calls for the destruction of Israel. Berry argued the term has nuanced meanings and does not automatically equate to hate speech. Amid audience disruptions, Hawley emphasized the need to condemn antisemitism, highlighting increased violence against Jews and the lack of safety felt by Jewish students in U.S. colleges, as Jewish groups seek legal accountability against organizations linked to campus protests.
