Hattiesburg VFW extends hurricane relief supply donation deadline through noon Sunday
SUMMARY: Recovery efforts continue in Hattiesburg as the Veterans‘ Relief Supply Drive for Florida hurricane victims has been extended by one day, allowing more donations. Members of VFW Post 3036 loaded a truck with supplies collected over recent days and will accept donations on Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The truck departs for Florida on Monday. Organizers are seeking non-perishable food and essential supplies, urging the Pine Belt community to contribute. Supplies will be delivered to a VFW Post in St. Petersburg for distribution to hurricane survivors. Donations can also be made online at floridastormrelief.org.

Weddle takes oath of office as new Mississippi Court of Appeals judge
SUMMARY: Judge John Wed was officially sworn in as a Mississippi Court of Appeals judge this afternoon after being appointed by Governor Tate Reeves last September. The ceremony was attended by family, friends, and colleagues, celebrating his three decades of legal experience, including his recent role as district attorney for the First Circuit Judicial District since 2015. He has also been a public defender and served on the Mississippi Corrections and Criminal Justice Task Force. Judge Wed succeeds Judge Jim Greenley, and his official term will begin on October 14th. He expressed determination to embrace new challenges as he takes on this role.

The Community is involved in the 4th Annual Scarecrow Contest
SUMMARY: In October, National Dyslexia Awareness Month, local businesses in Mississippi are decorating scarecrows for a good cause. The Illumination Center for Dyslexia is hosting its fourth annual scarecrow decorating contest to raise awareness and support. With 35 scarecrows displayed throughout downtown Meridian, sponsored by various organizations, participants can share their stories through their creations. Funds raised will go towards dyslexia therapy for students at the center. Winners will be announced on November 2 at Singing Breakman Park, and entries and votes are still being accepted.

Tailgate Game: Choctaw Central at Newton County
