Hattiesburg pine trees damaged by pine beetles
SUMMARY: Pine trees in the Pine Belt are at risk of infestation by pine beetles, due to high summer temperatures and drought. The infestation can cause the trees to quickly die, posing a safety concern for residents. Signs of infestation include holes with sap at the edge, as well as sawdust around the tree. Residents are urged to assess their trees for these signs and have infected trees removed to prevent them from becoming a threat during severe weather. Contacting Hattiesburg City for information on tree removal or consultation is recommended. One resident, Dale Smith, had eight trees die within three months after becoming infected with the beetles.
