Hattiesburg considers new technology in 2024
SUMMARY: The city of Hattiesburg will consider adding new technology like drones and traffic cameras, but leaders want to hear from neighbors before making any decisions. The mayor says that the new technology will include automated license plate readers or ALPRs, cameras in school zones, radar cameras, and drones to help first responders. Residents have been given a survey asking their thoughts on where money received from fines should go and expressed privacy concerns. There will be four more information sessions hosted across the city for a full list and their locations visit WDAM.

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker said he wants to hear from residents during the upcoming series of meetings.

Jackson Democratic mayoral primary runoff
SUMMARY: In less than two weeks, Jackson will hold a Democratic mayoral primary runoff, with Senator John Horn leading the initial election with over 12,000 votes, while incumbent Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba garnered over 4,000 votes. Election Commissioner Sandra McCall urges higher voter turnout, as only 23% of registered voters participated in the primary. Many voters express surprise at Horn’s strong performance and attribute Lumumba’s decline in support to recent legal issues. Concerns over polling accessibility persist, with some voters advocating for app-based voting. Historically, runoff elections experience lower turnout, prompting McCall’s hopes for absentee voting to begin soon.
