Hattiesburg chapter of Habitat for Humanity puts wraps on 72nd home
SUMMARY: The Hattisburg family has moved into a new home, thanks to Habitat for Humanity of the Pine Belt. A dedication ceremony took place, celebrating the completion of the Bobby Moore family’s home on Park Avenue, marking Habitat’s 72nd construction in the area. Moore expressed her joy and gratitude for the home, where she will live with her grandchildren. Habitat for Humanity assists low-income families by requiring them to save, contribute volunteer hours, complete financial literacy courses, and maintain a manageable debt-to-income ratio, offering affordable mortgages as a result. Construction of the 73rd home is set to begin soon.

SUMMARY: Elijah Atkisson was convicted of aggravated DUI for the 2020 drunk driving death of Marcel Walker. Despite a seven-day trial, the jury took just 30 minutes to reach a guilty verdict. Prosecutors presented evidence that Atkisson’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he crashed into Walker’s car on I-20, causing a fiery explosion. Atkisson’s defense claimed it was a mistake, not intoxication. Walker’s family expressed relief after the verdict, with his uncle noting the long wait for justice. Atkisson will remain in jail until his sentencing on December 9th.

SUMMARY: Starting Monday, the Highway 80 bridge across the Pearl River will close for major repairs, impacting drivers in Hinds and Rankin counties. MDOT will replace three massive girders as part of a $9 million project. This work coincides with ongoing I-55 lane closures, causing additional traffic congestion. Local businesses, such as Van Life, are concerned about the impact on customer access and shipments. Drivers are advised to find alternative routes, though some local drivers are familiar with detours. The I-55 project is expected to be completed early next year, but the bridge repairs may take up to nine months.
