Over 150 firefighters are participating, each completing 18 hours of training, which includes using the Darren Endis Training Tower. Simulated scenarios involve rescuing trapped firefighters under various conditions, highlighted by limited visibility from smoke machines. Supervisors monitor progress with thermal cameras. Mississippi tax reform bill promises grocery savings, higher gas costs
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s House Bill 1 proposes significant tax reforms, including a gradual reduction of income and grocery taxes from 7% to 2.5% over 10 years, starting with a drop to 4.5% in 2026. This could save families about $450 annually on groceries. However, a new 5% gas tax may increase fuel prices by 13 cents per gallon to provide stable funding for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Local governments may add a 1.5% sales tax, raising total sales tax to 8.5% in certain areas. Lawmakers face a February deadline to balance tax relief with necessary revenue for local services and infrastructure.
A proposed tax reform in Mississippi promises to cut grocery taxes and raise gas costs to support infrastructure improvements.
