Gavin's coaching career began in 1973 at Harrison Central High School and included roles at St. John High School, East Central, and D'Iberville, among others. He later served as the Defensive Coordinator at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and was the Athletic Director for the Harrison County school district until 2014.
