SUMMARY: The Tampa River O’ Green Festival, a St. Patrick’s Day tradition, faces pushback from environmentalists concerned about the use of dye to color the Hillsborough River. Many, including local fishing guide Captain Dustin Pack, argue that the dye could harm the river’s ecosystem, citing a growing petition with over 7,200 signatures aiming to end the practice. While the city claims the dye is non-toxic and biodegradable, opponents assert that it is still unnatural and harmful. Pack is advocating for alternative ways to celebrate the holiday, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in local festivities.
