Gunn touts advancements in education as highlight of speakership
SUMMARY: Philip Gunn, Mississippi's first Republican House speaker since Reconstruction, is highlighting the state's education improvements as the highlight of his tenure. Under his leadership, the state passed the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which has led to significant improvements in third-grade literacy rates. Prior to the legislation, only 64% of third-graders could read on a third-grade level, but now that number has increased to over 90%. Mississippi's fourth-graders also achieved the No. 1 spot in the nation for gains in reading and mathematics, a first in state history. Additionally, the state passed its largest-ever teacher pay raise, exceeding both the southeastern and national averages in starting pay.

SUMMARY: Mississippi artists aged 21 and older have the chance to win $2,000 and be spotlighted at the state's largest art festival through the Blue Moon Art Project contest. Participants are required to submit a contemporary, museum-quality canvas (24″ x 36″) without beer bottles or text, inspired by the Blue Moon beer brand. Applications can be downloaded from the Peter Anderson Festival website and must be submitted with the artwork by October 4 at the Ocean Springs Chamber Main Street offices. The Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival will occur in downtown Ocean Springs on November 2-3.

SUMMARY: A manhunt in Harrison County concluded with the arrest of Bricen John Rivers, charged with one count of murder. Deputies responded to Wolf River Cemetery, where they found Rivers running into the woods. A deceased woman, 22-year-old Lauren Johansen of Gulfport, was found in the vehicle Rivers fled from. Johansen, reported missing July 2, attended school in Hattiesburg. Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, ultimately locating Rivers and arresting him. He is held at Harrison County Adult Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.
